Therapeutic effect of tiropramide, a newly developed spasmolytic and motility regulating agent, for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome, was evaluated with randomized, double-blind trial.
Forty five patients were randomly allocated to receive either tiropramide 100mg t.i.d. or placebo for 4 weeks. Before and after treatment, the intensity of gastrointestinal symptoms (abdominal pain, distension, diarrhea, constipation, dyspepsia, and nausea : vomiting) was scored 0 to 3 in order of increasing severity.
Treatment with tiropramide induced a significant regression of symptoms and the global clinical efficacy was 68%. The result was significant reduction of the intensity of symptoms was observed during the first two weeks and continued during the. next two weeks. Only 4 out of 25 patients treated with tiropramide complained of mild dry mouth and constipation. Therefore, it is concluded that tiropramide is an effective and well tolerated treatment for the therapy of irritable bowel syndrome.
